What is the IMBA Top-Up
The IMBA Top-Up is the final stage of the International Masters of Business Administration, awarded by Buckinghamshire New University (BNU). It is open to professionals who have already completed a recognised Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Business Administration – or equivalent – and wish to convert their qualification into a full MBA by completing the 60-credit Independent Professional Project.
This is your opportunity to conduct a substantial, self-directed piece of research or consultancy work in a business or management area of your choosing, supervised by an experienced academic. On successful completion, you will be awarded the full International MBA at Level 7.
Who is it for?
The IMBA Top-Up is specifically designed for professionals who already hold a PGDip in Business Administration or equivalent and want to complete their journey to full MBA level.
PGDip holders
Professionals with an existing Postgraduate Diploma in Business or Management who want full MBA recognition.
Practising managers
Mid-to-senior managers who want to ground their experience in a rigorous, independently conducted research project.

What will you do?
The Top-Up consists of a single, 60-credit Independent Professional Project – a substantial piece of original research or evidence-based enquiry into a business or management issue of your choice.
Independent Professional Project
A self-managed, supervised research project demonstrating mastery of a chosen area of business or management. You will design, conduct, and present original empirical research or problem-based inquiry, applying advanced analytical and critical thinking skills to produce findings of genuine professional value.
Through the project you will demonstrate:
- Identify and define a significant business or management research question
- Design and apply an appropriate research methodology
- Critically analyse and evaluate evidence from a range of quantitative and qualitative sources
- Produce a coherent, well-structured academic dissertation or professional report
- Reflect critically on your own professional practice in relation to published literature
- Communicate complex ideas clearly for a professional and academic audience
How will you study?
Academic supervision
Regular scheduled meetings with your assigned supervisor to review progress, discuss findings, and refine your approach.
VLE access
Full access to BNU's Virtual Learning Environment, library, e-journals, and research databases throughout your project.
Flexible study
The project is largely self-directed, allowing you to structure your research around your professional commitments.
Assessment
Assessed through the submitted dissertation or professional project report, in line with BNU's Level 7 academic regulations.
Entry Requirements
The IMBA Top-Up is open to applicants who have already completed the taught elements of an MBA programme at PGDip level.
Standard entry
A Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration or equivalent (120 credits at Level 7), including the core IMBA taught modules, from a recognised institution.
English language
If your first language is not English, an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required, with no individual category below 6.0.
Alternative pathways
Prior learning may also be considered through the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process. Experienced professionals without formal PGDip qualifications may be considered via portfolio and interview in line with BNU’s flexible entry policy for MBA programmes.
